A Timers View - by Cindy Gabri

Timing and scoring has changed dramatically over the past thirty years with new technologies. Timing with stopwatches has gone from the main system, to emergency backup. Computers, transponders and I-card have taken first in timing systems. These improvements have made timing easier in some ways.

Timing still needs workers. Taping is still necessary to do lap charts to back up the modern timing system. Lap tapes and charts are used to determine a cars place in-group standing during or at the end of each on
track session. In case of a system or transponder failure or a dispute, lap tapes and chart are used to help determine a cars position.

Each group of cars on course has lap tapes written. The number of every car crossing the start/finish line is written down in the order in which it crosses. This takes concentration with packs of cars not to miswrite or omit a car number. This is not much of a problem in small
groups, but in larger groups have tendencies to bunch up in large packs. Normally this is not a big problem for timers, unless there are distractions. The spectacular view for officials, crew and drivers is interesting from the timing tower. Spectators are welcome but, please, have
consideration for the workers in the timing tower. They are trying to do their jobs as efficiently as they can. The continual or loud discussions behind the timers can be a distraction at times.

Illegible numbers on a car can be a timer’s nightmare at times. Fancy or elaborate graphics on a car are stunning and surely make a car look good standing on the ground admiring it setting still. Add movement, speed and
distance those neat graphics can blur or become confusing to read. If your

car has numbers and graphics that might look cluttered or busy it may be hard to make out in the fraction of a second a timer has to read it. This can and often does result in missing the car number and/or others in the
approaching group. Clear-cut numbers with a clear background are easy to read. If you think, your graphics might not be clear you can have a friend or crew member go up to timing and try to write a list of approaching cars with you in the pack to see how easy it is to distinguish the car numbers.

Experience is not necessary to work in timing if you have an interest.

Come on up. Join us. Try it.

WORKER'S NEEDED

MVR is hosting the only drivers school at Nelson Ledges in 2007.  It will be a Double School.  Which means cars on track on a Friday.  The date of the school is April 20-22.

MVR members - we need your help.  While all the regions chip in with providing workers - it would be nice if for once MVR had the majority of them.  You do not need experience in a particular speciality to help out.
Lunches are provided and dinner on Saturday night.

Speciality areas are:

F & C
Grid
Pit
Tech
Sound
Start
Registration
T & S

See the enclosed entry for times.
